Traditional Chinese Medicine

A system of diagnosis based on a patient’s symptoms as well as:

  • tell-tale markers on the tongue and
  • Chinese pulses which are located near the left and right wrists.

Treatment consists of a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas. This system of medicine has been honed and perfected over the last two millennia and is effective in:

  • balancing hormonal conditions
  • treating muscle and nerve pain
  • raising energy levels
  • improving digestive function
  • regulating the mental and emotional spheres, etc.

Acupuncture

This involves the use of fine sterile needles placed on specific points on the body, linking to form channels or meridians. The needles are used to stimulate proper flow of energy (Qi) along these meridians. Acupuncture helps to remove blockages to the movement of energy. This therapy can be used to treat general conditions such as fatigue, but also works locally to improve joint and muscle pain. Once the blockage, which manifests as pain, is removed, function and mobility return to the joint or muscle. Acupuncture can be used for a wide range of conditions from insomnia to skin problems.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs are combined with Acupuncture to better treat the symptom picture. Combination of Chinese herbs can be used to treat conditions such as the common cold, gallstones and improve the function of the liver, just to name a few.

Herbal Medicine

Plants have been used for thousands of centuries in various forms to bring about healing. Herbs can be used in the form of

  • teas
  • poultices
  • ointments
  • tinctures (alcoholic extracts), etc.

These natural medicines were the predecessors to modern pharmacology. Many plant derivatives are still used today to manufacture prescription drugs, but they are highly concentrated forms of the original substance. With herbal medicines, the healing properties of the whole plant are used to gently and naturally improve the condition. Herbal medicine can be used to treat migraines, liver function, urinary tract infections and improve digestion to name a few.

Nutrition

Nutrition involves the use of food as medicine. This is a very useful tool as the patient uses their daily diet for nourishment as well as a form of preventative medicine. This is beneficial for almost any condition as you are helping the overall organism when you improve the fuel it is supplied. There are different approaches that Naturopathic Doctors can take within the field of nutrition. Nutritional counseling, Supplementation of natural products, and Detoxification/ Cleansing programs

Nutritional Counseling

Your dietary regimen is evaluated and lifestyle changes are suggested in order to:

  • optimize energy and digestive function.
  • Improve mental and emotional outlook.
  • Increase nutrient intake to lessen mood swings and control diabetic conditions.
  • Achieve optimal weight.
  • Improve mental function, etc.

Supplements of Natural Products

In addition to a nutrient-rich diet, supplements of natural products are added as necessary to ensure that your body has the support it needs for all the millions of physiological and biochemical processes that it performs every day. Supplements can include:

  • Multivitamins and minerals
  • Plant extracts
  • Specific natural substances
  • or combinations of the above.

Supplements can also be used to enhance specific processes such as digestion, reduce muscle and joint pain, and fight infections, etc.

Detoxification Programs/ Cleanses

These programs are very useful when done annually or bi-annually to help the overall function of the liver and the rest of the body. The nutrient intake is lighter and supplements and herbal medicine can be added in order to allow the body time to repair and regenerate. This is very helpful for allergies, asthma, skin problems, overall well-being and energy levels. As our environment becomes more polluted, it is beneficial to have a cleansing ritual at least annually to ‘rev’ the system.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy was originally discovered by Samuel Hahnemann in Germany in the 19th century, and is now practiced all over the world. It is quite popular in Europe, with treatment being given in conventional medical hospitals. Hahnemann found that a minute dose of a natural substance will bring about a cure in an individual suffering from a disease condition. The patient is interviewed in depth to find out characteristics that are unique to themselves and then these criteria are matched with a homeopathic remedy of which there are thousands. This highly individualized system has the widest scope of treatment. It can treat acute and chronic conditions from the common cold, or a bruise, to cancer and other organic pathologies.

Bowen Therapy

This gentle therapy was developed by an Australian physiotherapist named Tom Bowen. This hands-on treatment performed on various muscles and tendons on the body is very useful for chronic muscle tightness and pain, as well as nerve dysfunctions such as sciatica. Bowen therapy promotes relaxation of body and mind, and works well for muscle or nerve pain caused by traumatic incidents such as accidents. It is also used to balance the hormonal systems, treat migraines, relieve chronic constipation and detoxify the body.

Lifestyle Counseling

These are measures designed to improve the quality of life and overall well-being of the patient. It can include techniques for:

  • Stress management
  • Exercise protocols
  • Breathing exercises
  • and other healthy habits to incorporate into a daily regime.
